Llave de sol (Llave of sun) is a treble clef symbol representing the tonic or root of a chord, as well as its resolving power. In addition to its role in the notation of melodies and harmonies, the llave de sol serves as the starting point for many rhythms in Afro-Cuban music, particularly rumba. It is also used as a basis for guajeos, or strum patterns.
In some Afro-Cuban forms, a strict relationship between the clave and other musical parts is required. For example, in rumba, a single pattern of 3-2/2-3 is often repeated indefinitely, so that the melody and harmonies can build upon one another, forming a compositional whole. In contrast, some other Afro-Cuban genres do not require such a rigid structural relationship between the clave and other musical sections.
Claves de son is a musical style that uses a variation of the rumba clave in combination with other claves. It is a rhythmic style that originated in the 1930s and has become a part of Afro-Cuban popular culture. The clave de son is also found in some timbales, salsas and mambos.
The clave de son has a strong rhythmic basis and is played on a guitar, trumpet, saxophone or bass. It is often associated with latin jazz and ska, but can be found in other genres as well.

Stefan Siemons, musician and trained wind instrument maker, experienced the impact that music can have on a child during his voluntary service in Brazil and saw the need for a workshop to teach young people from marginalised neighbourhoods to play musical instruments. Together with social education worker Tereza Cristina Vieira, he founded the association Asociacao Comunitaria Clave de Sol. The association now has four trainees and hopes that the Brazilian authorities will support the project in future.
